However, it was no great surprise when they realised that the expedition was actually Gary's – he has a reputation for seeking out adventure and embracing the bizarre. The photos of the children were taken in one of the remotest parts of New Guinea which Gary and his wife Romana had travelled over ten days to reach in search of natural unspoiled environments. Their journey was initially by truck followed by three days in a motorised canoe on the Upper Setik River to reach their destination. They stayed in the village of the Kwoma tribe where many of the children had never seen a white person before.
