Snappy dresser keeps course in condition
A versatile Dakota top-dressing machine from Campey Turf Care Systems is helping a Lancashire golf course maintain high-quality greens effectively and efficiently.
Colin Worthington, Head Greenkeeper at Werneth Golf Club, near Oldham, says that the Dakota 410 has become an essential part of his machinery fleet. “It performs brilliantly. It can apply a variety of materials accurately, evenly and as fine as dust. Even damp top-dressings that have to be stored outside are spread like a dream come true.”
It is easy to underestimate the importance of top-dressing. Using the appropriate materials, turf managers can use it to maintain the correct soil profile and combat the accumulation of thatch layers. It also allows a true, even surface to be kept, even on heavily used ground.
Colin, who has worked for Werneth Golf Club for 26 years, exemplifies many greenkeepers who advocate a ‘little and often’ approach, applying top-dressings frequently but sparingly. This requires equipment that can be set precisely and which lends itself to quick, efficient operation.

He uses the Dakota 410 at least once a month from April through to October, applying top-dressing and fertiliser on the greens. At the heart of the machine is a dual spinner discharge system that gives a uniform distribution pattern.
Colin has a trailed version of the 410, which is powered by the Club’s tractor. The machine is also available in configurations to attach to utility vehicles like the Toro Workman and the John Deere Pro Gator. Spreading width can be varied between 3.55 - 9m, and the machine has a hopper capacity of 0.65 cu m. Turf tyres are fitted as standard.
Colin finds the 410 is particularly easy to operate. Digital readouts in the tractor cab facilitate adjustment of the belts and spinners to suit the type of material being applied. The controls are conveniently located near to the operator.
“The machine is perfect and does a great job every time,” says Colin. “It gets the job done quickly and accurately, so we don’t waste time going back to check for lumps on the surface.”
The Dakotas are designed to give great versatility, enabling turf professionals to move materials to site, top-dress, spread fertiliser and even fill bunkers.
